AMAA 2026 Nominations: Nigeria’s Best-Film Contenders and a More Useful Way to Read the List

Nigeria has two films in the Best Film race at the 2026 Africa Movie Academy Awards: To Adaego With Love and The Herd. The nominations offer more than a contest over which national industry wins. They are also a route into the different kinds of work being made across African cinema.

Premium Times’ October 18 account of the nominations identifies the ceremony as scheduled for November 15 in Lagos. It reports eleven nominations for To Adaego With Love, ten for The Herd and nine for Colours of Fire. Those totals cover different categories; they are not three Nigerian entries in Best Film.

Three prominent Nigerian films, different category pictures

Film Reported nomination total Best Film nomination
To Adaego With Love 11 Yes
The Herd 10 Yes
Colours of Fire 9 Not on the reported Best Film list

The wider list includes Uganda’s Slum Bomber and Kenya’s One Woman, One Bra, which the report places at fourteen nominations each. That continental picture is worth keeping in view: following Nigerian work need not mean treating films from elsewhere in Africa as background to a local rivalry.

Start a watch list with the achievement that interests you

A nomination total compresses several different questions into one number. A screenplay category directs attention towards how a story is built. Cinematography concerns a different contribution, while a performance nomination identifies the work of an actor. A film can appear in several categories without each nomination being a separate verdict on every part of the production.

For a practical watch list, choose a small number of titles and record the category that drew you to each. Someone interested in how a place is evoked might start with visual and production-design recognition. Someone interested in character might follow acting and writing. This is a way to organise your viewing, not a claim that PMNBuzz has screened every nominee or ranked them independently.

Then read the official synopsis and find an authorised release. A festival or awards nomination does not mean that a title is immediately available in every Nigerian cinema or streaming catalogue. Keep a note for later rather than follow a dubious “full movie” link that happens to use a nomination poster.

Do not read a nomination as an announced winner

The distinction sounds obvious, but promotional graphics often travel without their dates or category labels. Check whether a post says selected, nominated, shortlisted or awarded. A cast member celebrating a nomination is not announcing the result of the final ceremony.

The same care applies to comparisons. Counting nominations can show breadth across the categories in which a work was eligible and considered. It does not provide an objective measurement of artistic quality or prove that a film with fewer nominations is less worthwhile. Eligibility, categories and the selection process also shape the list.

What to follow before the ceremony

Use the organiser’s current announcements for any change to the ceremony or access arrangements. Treat unofficial voting links and requests for payment cautiously; do not assume that sending money or sharing a graphic is part of an awards process. The rules for one institution should not be borrowed from another simply because both present film prizes.

Between the nomination announcement and the ceremony, the most rewarding conversation may be about the work itself: how the films tell their stories, which contributors are credited and what a viewer notices on a second look. Our guide to reading a Nollywood film’s credits is a useful companion if the technical categories are unfamiliar.

The nominations create an occasion for discovery. Following the titles with curiosity—rather than claiming a result before it exists—gives that occasion value beyond an awards-night prediction.
