Bolt’s Lagos Ride Data Offers a Partial View of How the City Moves

Lagos does not travel for one reason or on one timetable. Work, errands, deliveries and evening plans create different kinds of movement, and a new account of Bolt’s local ride data offers a glimpse of those patterns among its users.

BellaNaija’s October 16 feature describes Standard rides as the largest share of activity in the figures provided, alongside Comfort trips, shorter three-wheeler journeys in selected areas and package deliveries.

The important boundary is the dataset. These are patterns described through one company’s services, not a complete survey of every Lagos commuter. They do not include all the people travelling by bus, private car, train, ferry or on foot.

That limitation does not make the information useless. It means the right question is what this particular view can tell us, rather than what it cannot represent.

The trip begins before the driver arrives

For a passenger, a smoother journey often starts with a precise pickup point. A building name alone may be insufficient when entrances open onto different roads or a driver cannot stop safely at the pin.

Before requesting a ride, check where it is practical to wait and whether the destination has a particular entrance. Share relevant instructions through the application without posting private contact details publicly.

Allow extra time when travelling to a time-sensitive event. A quoted estimate is useful, but it cannot guarantee how a journey will unfold if traffic, weather or access arrangements change.

For a delivery, the key information is different: the recipient’s availability, an accurate handover point and whether the item is suitable for the service. A package should not be sent on the assumption that the recipient can abandon another commitment to meet it.

Company data can help businesses think about these routines, but a percentage alone does not explain why an individual chose a category. Convenience, availability, distance and personal preference may overlap.

The most useful conclusion is therefore modest. Lagos contains several travel needs within the same day, and services have to fit the actual trip rather than an imagined average passenger. For travellers, a little preparation around pickup, timing and handover can matter more than the label attached to the ride.
