Super Falcons forward Gift Monday has thanked Washington Spirit as she moves into the next chapter of her club career with Boston Legacy in the National Women’s Soccer League.
PUNCH’s October 17 report describes a farewell message posted after the transfer. The report says the October 8 trade involved $500,000 in transfer-threshold funds and a 20 per cent sell-on provision for Washington.

Monday joined the Spirit from UD Tenerife in 2025. The new move keeps her within the NWSL while placing her in a different club environment, with new teammates and a different set of sporting expectations.
The adjustment behind a transfer announcement
A move between clubs can look complete when the photographs and welcome messages appear. For the player, much of the work follows afterwards: learning the team’s patterns, understanding a coach’s expectations and finding the most useful way to combine with new attacking partners.
For a forward, that can involve details as small as when a teammate prefers to release a pass or which spaces the team wants occupied during the build-up. Familiarity develops through training and matches, rather than being supplied by a transfer fee.
Supporters should also distinguish the terms of a club transaction from a player’s personal salary. A reported transfer value does not establish how much an individual will earn, and a sell-on provision concerns a potential later transaction under the agreement’s terms.
Monday’s farewell offers a more personal view of the change. A professional move can be a positive opportunity while still involving the loss of familiar routines and relationships. There is no contradiction in expressing gratitude to a former club while preparing to compete for a new one.
For Nigerian fans following her development, the next useful measures will be her role, minutes and performances in Boston’s system. A first appearance or a single scoring opportunity will provide only a small part of that picture.
Club updates and official match reports will give the clearest record of how the transition unfolds. National-team selection and future club results remain separate matters, rather than automatic consequences of the move.
The farewell closes one chapter of Monday’s career. The more interesting football story now is how she uses the next opportunity — and how her new team plans to make the most of the qualities it has brought into its attack.
