Travellers moving through Lagos Island this weekend should allow for disruption around Independence Bridge, where urgent asphalt repairs are scheduled to run from the night of October 16 through October 18.
The Lagos State Government’s notice, reported by PUNCH, describes work affecting both directions of the bridge. The plan is to close sections in phases while maintaining a lane for movement, with LASTMA personnel managing traffic around the work area.

The announcement does not make a fixed journey-time promise. Conditions can vary with the stage of work, traffic volume and the instructions being given at the location.
Before leaving home
Check for a current update from the Lagos transport authorities and inspect the route close to departure. An old screenshot of a diversion notice may be missing a later change, while a navigation app may take time to reflect an on-the-ground traffic instruction.
If you have a flight, medical appointment or another time-sensitive commitment, build a realistic margin into the journey. When arranging a pickup, tell the driver which side of the affected area you intend to meet on rather than relying on a landmark that may be difficult to reach.
For visitors attending an event, confirm both the venue address and its recommended approach. Lagos Island, Victoria Island and the wider mainland should not be treated as interchangeable locations simply because an invitation uses “Lagos” in its heading.
While approaching the works
Follow officers’ directions and temporary road signs, even where a saved map suggests a different movement. Avoid stopping to negotiate a pickup at a point where vehicles are being channelled into a narrower lane.
People using a ride-hailing service can also reduce confusion by agreeing on a safe meeting point before the driver arrives. If a route becomes impractical, communicate the change promptly rather than leaving both sides to circle the area.
The repairs form a specific, dated traffic advisory. They should not be mistaken for a permanent closure or a statement that every nearby route is inaccessible.
For businesses expecting deliveries, a quick message to customers or suppliers can be more helpful than waiting for a delay to occur. Include the work dates and direct people to the latest official update.
A little preparation will not remove the disruption, but it can reduce avoidable uncertainty — particularly for people who do not regularly travel through this part of Lagos.
