Nairobi’s marathon weekend is approaching, and the city’s streets are about to become part of a much larger race-day plan. The Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon is scheduled for Sunday, October 25, with Uhuru Gardens and the Southern Bypass central to the event’s layout.
The official marathon website and 2026 runners’ guide are the places to check final instructions. The programme includes a marathon, half-marathon, 10-kilometre and 5-kilometre events, alongside the wheelchair half-marathon. Those are separate race categories, so participants should follow the instructions for their own entry rather than borrow a friend’s timetable.

Registration has closed, and the organiser describes an event with more than 30,000 entrants. A large field makes preparation beyond training especially important. Arriving at the correct access point, carrying the required race materials and knowing where to meet someone afterwards can make the day far less stressful.
The journey is part of the race
For visitors, the event should be planned around confirmed road and venue arrangements rather than a normal Sunday travel estimate. A route that is convenient on an ordinary day may be affected by the race. Leaving extra time is useful, but it is not a substitute for checking the organiser’s latest transport and access information.
Nairobi uses East Africa Time, two hours ahead of Nigeria’s West Africa Time. That matters for supporters following remotely or coordinating calls with a runner. A start time shared without its time zone can easily create confusion, particularly when different race distances start at different points in the morning.
Spectators should also choose meeting locations carefully. A precise, permitted point away from the busiest finish-area movement is more practical than agreeing vaguely to meet near the line. Phone batteries, network congestion and the time it takes a participant to leave the controlled area are ordinary details worth anticipating.
For runners, avoid last-minute experiments
Race week is not the ideal moment to copy another person’s equipment or nutrition routine. Shoes, clothing and food that have already worked in training are generally less likely to produce surprises than an untested purchase. Anyone who is unwell or concerned about participating should seek appropriate medical advice rather than treat an entry confirmation as a reason to ignore symptoms.
The event guide should take priority over unofficial advice about where to leave bags, which items are permitted or when access closes. Those arrangements are operational decisions by the organiser and can change. A previous year’s screenshot is not a reliable replacement for the current instructions.
For people following African athletics, the marathon offers more than the eventual winning times. It is a meeting point between elite competition, recreational running and a city’s ability to host a major public event. The shorter distances allow different ambitions to share the same occasion without pretending every participant is attempting the same physical challenge.
The best final preparation is therefore simple but specific: check the latest guide, confirm your category and transport, and make a clear plan for after the finish. That leaves more attention for the reason people entered in the first place—the experience of running through Nairobi together.
