WhatsApp Guest Calling Lets People Join From a Browser Without an Account

The person missing from a group call is often the person who does not use the same application. WhatsApp’s new guest-calling feature is intended to reduce that problem by allowing invited participants to join through a computer browser without creating a WhatsApp account.

In its October 14 announcement, Meta says an account holder can create a call link and share it with guests. Guests enter a name and wait for the host to admit them. The company says the feature supports individual and group calls with up to 32 people and uses end-to-end encryption.

The guest experience is deliberately narrower than full membership of the service. Guests cannot see other participants’ phone numbers, send messages or directly add more people. The host can remove a participant from the call.

For a tutor, small business or family arranging an occasional conversation, this could remove an unnecessary installation step. It does not remove the need to manage who receives the invitation.

Treat the link as an invitation

A host should send the link through a channel the intended guest recognises and check names in the waiting room before admitting people. A familiar display name is not a complete identity check, particularly when a link has been forwarded.

For a business meeting, explain the subject and expected participants in the invitation. That makes an unexpected request easier to spot and helps guests distinguish a real appointment from a message designed to create urgency.

Screen sharing also deserves care. Before presenting a document, close unrelated windows and check that notifications will not expose private information. Encryption protects a connection; it does not prevent a participant from seeing something that is deliberately shared on screen.

Guests who cannot access the feature should first check the official instructions and their browser rather than install an application offered by an unknown support account. Availability and interfaces can change as a feature rolls out.

Meta also described calendar integration as a later development, so it should not be assumed to be present in every account now. The immediate change is simpler: an account holder can invite someone into a controlled call without requiring that guest to become a WhatsApp user first.
