Nigeria’s network-quality complaints put telecom upgrades under fresh scrutiny

Nigeria’s telecom operators are facing renewed parliamentary scrutiny over service quality. The House of Representatives has directed the chief executives of major providers to appear on October 28, with lawmakers seeking explanations for persistent customer complaints.

According to Nairametrics’ October 22 report, the investigating committee asked the Nigerian Communications Commission to ensure attendance by executives from MTN, Globacom, Airtel, MAFAB and other providers. The committee also requested relevant documents. Its warning about possible arrest for non-attendance should not be reported as an arrest that has already happened.

The investigation addresses a problem that reaches beyond inconvenience. A dropped call can interrupt a business conversation; an unreliable data connection can affect a payment, a lesson or a work deadline. The same network fault can therefore feel very different depending on what a subscriber is trying to do.

What a service complaint should establish

The phrase poor network covers several possibilities. A phone may show a signal but fail to complete a call. A connection may work outside a building but struggle inside it. Data may become slow at a busy time while remaining usable earlier in the day. Recording those details makes a complaint more useful than reporting only that everything is bad.

A subscriber can note the location, approximate time, affected service and whether the problem repeats. The device and account should also be considered before assuming the entire network is down. For example, an exhausted data allowance and a failed connection are different problems even if both prevent a page from loading.

There is no need to publish private account details in a public comment to make the complaint visible. Customer-support staff can request necessary information through an appropriate channel. A person claiming to help should never need a subscriber’s banking password or a one-time code for an unrelated financial account.

Investment is not the same as experience

Operators can report infrastructure spending while customers continue to encounter failures. That does not automatically mean the spending did not occur; it means a financial input and a service outcome are different measures. The useful scrutiny asks where upgrades happened, which problems they were intended to solve and what changed afterwards.

The hearing also needs to distinguish an isolated fault from recurring capacity or reliability problems. A national average may conceal difficult local conditions, while one person’s bad experience cannot measure every location. Specific evidence makes both the regulator’s questions and an operator’s answers more meaningful.

For businesses dependent on connectivity, a realistic backup arrangement can reduce disruption without excusing poor service. The appropriate choice depends on the work involved and the cost; no single alternative will suit every household or enterprise. Providers remain responsible for the service they sell, regardless of whether customers have found a workaround.

October 28 is therefore a date to watch for explanations and documented commitments, not a reason to assume the issue has been resolved. The practical test after any hearing will be whether subscribers can make calls, complete transactions and use their data more dependably in the places where they actually live and work.
