The Diplomat has returned for a fourth season, with Netflix taking its political drama into rooms filled with people who work around real-world diplomacy and government.

Netflix’s account of the launch describes screenings in London, Canberra, Brussels and Washington, D.C., organised with POLITICO. The new season debuted on October 15, with Keri Russell returning as Kate Wyler and Rufus Sewell as Hal Wyler.

The Washington event brought Russell, Sewell and creator Debora Cahn together for a conversation about the series. Netflix also says the season expanded its production footprint to Italy alongside locations in the United Kingdom and United States.

The launch provides an interesting meeting point between the show’s fictional world and the professions it draws on. Its characters negotiate formal responsibilities while dealing with personal loyalties, relationships and ambition — pressures that make the setting work as drama.

Political fiction and the pleasure of complicated conversations

One appeal of a series like The Diplomat is that a conversation can function as an action scene. A character may need to persuade an ally, conceal a motive or discover what another person already knows. A pause or an apparently minor change in wording can move the scene forward.

That makes continuity important for returning viewers. Remembering who holds which office and how the central relationships ended in the previous season can help the new episodes land. A short recap from an official source is likely to be more useful than a social-media compilation that mixes scenes from different points in the story.

The diplomatic setting should also be enjoyed as fiction. Characters and crises are written to serve a narrative, and an entertaining negotiation is not a guide to how a particular real institution operates.

For viewers who prefer to avoid spoilers, cast interviews, episode descriptions and discussions of the finale require care. Even a headline about a character’s new position can reveal a development intended to unfold on screen.

The four-city screening programme shows how Netflix is positioning the return: as a series with an audience interested in both its performances and its political setting. The episodes will ultimately determine how successfully that combination continues.

All four seasons are now available on Netflix according to the streamer’s announcement. Viewers should check the service in their own territory for the current listing and available accessibility options before settling in for the next chapter of Kate Wyler’s assignment.
