The One About Matthew Perry turns to family and longtime friends to remember the actor beyond Chandler

The One About Matthew Perry arrived on Netflix on October 27, 2026, a day before the third anniversary of the actor’s death. Directed by Mary Robertson, the three-part documentary draws its central perspective from Perry’s sister and people who knew him away from the extraordinary familiarity of Friends.

That choice gives the series a clear purpose. Millions of viewers can recognise Chandler Bing’s reactions within seconds. Knowing a character that well, however, is different from knowing the performer as a brother, friend or colleague. The documentary sets out to bring those less familiar relationships into the foreground.

The people doing the remembering

Netflix’s guide to the series identifies Perry’s sister Mia Perry Bowick and longtime friends Roger Castillo and David Pressman among the contributors. The production uses photographs and video from the family’s private archive. Its professional perspectives include Friends writer-producer Jeff Strauss and director Jonathan Lynn, who worked with Perry on The Whole Nine Yards.

Those contributors occupy different positions in the story. A colleague can describe choices made during work; a friend can recall a life that continued outside the production schedule. A sibling’s memories may reach across periods that public audiences know only through a handful of famous roles.

The value is in allowing those perspectives to remain distinct. If every memory is forced to illustrate the same conclusion, a life can become smaller rather than clearer. A documentary portrait has room to show how someone could be experienced differently by people who all knew him well.

Why the Friends cast is not the main frame

Netflix confirms that Perry’s five principal Friends co-stars were approached but did not give new interviews for the documentary; they appear in archival material. Their absence from the interview lineup should not be turned into speculation about their feelings or relationships. The documented fact is the production choice and its resulting focus.

For viewers, that focus may require a small adjustment. The title deliberately recalls the familiar naming style of Friends episodes, but the series is not presented as another cast reunion. It follows relationships that can explain parts of Perry’s life without retelling every milestone of the sitcom.

That can also change the meaning of a familiar archive clip. A performance seen inside an episode serves the scene and the joke. The same footage placed beside a colleague’s recollection may direct attention towards preparation, timing or the conditions under which the work was made. Context changes what the viewer notices, even when the image itself is already well known.

Perry’s own account belongs beside the new portrait

Perry had already told his story in Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing. The publisher’s original announcement dates that memoir to November 1, 2022 and describes a book covering his screen career and struggles with addiction. It remains a separate form of testimony: Perry choosing how to present his experience in his own voice.

A later documentary necessarily works differently. It gathers other people, existing records and editorial decisions into a narrative made after the subject’s death. That need not diminish it, but it does mean viewers can hold the memoir and the documentary alongside each other without expecting them to perform the same job.

The distinction is especially relevant to an actor whose public image became so closely associated with a particular kind of humour. An autobiography can challenge an audience’s assumptions directly. A remembrance asks others to explain what those assumptions missed and to decide which memories they are ready to share.

Humour remains part of the portrait

In an interview reported by CinemaBlend, Robertson said making room for Perry’s humour was part of her intention. Her own project page likewise presents the series around recollections of his generosity, personality and candour, and confirms her role as director and executive producer.

That emphasis matters because a remembrance can become so dominated by its ending that earlier years seem to exist only as a path towards it. Humour allows a different register: what people enjoyed about someone’s company, how a working relationship felt, or why a particular moment remained vivid decades later.

The series also addresses addiction and loss, as its official description makes clear. Those subjects belong to the documented life without becoming the only way to describe it. The editorial challenge is to preserve the person’s contradictions, accomplishments and relationships together.

For viewers who have returned to Friends repeatedly, this release offers a change of distance. Chandler remains the character they know. The One About Matthew Perry asks them to listen to people who knew Matthew in other ways, and to allow those memories to complicate an already familiar face.
