Roqqu’s Nigerian Stock Token Plan Raises Questions About What Investors Would Actually Own

Putting a share-linked token on a blockchain does not remove the need to understand the share behind it. That is the central issue in Roqqu’s plan to make Nigerian equities accessible through a tokenised structure.

According to TechCabal’s October 16 report, the company is discussing arrangements involving brokers, custodians and other financial institutions. Its executives describe a structure in which underlying shares would be held in custody and corresponding tokens could be distributed through digital platforms.

Important details remain undisclosed. The report does not identify the first Nigerian stocks or name the institutional partners, and the product’s regulatory position and launch remain uncertain. An ambition to introduce something before 2027 is not the same as a product that has received every necessary approval and is available to buy.

For a potential investor, the most useful question is not how quickly a token can move. It is what enforceable rights move with it.

Three layers to understand

First is the underlying asset. Who holds the shares, and how can a customer verify that enough are held to support the tokens issued? A technical record of tokens does not, on its own, prove the contents of a custody account.

Second is the customer’s legal relationship. The documents would need to explain dividends, corporate actions, redemptions and what happens if a participant in the structure stops operating. Exposure to a share price is not automatically identical to being the registered shareholder.

Third is access across borders. A product that can technically be transferred online may still be subject to rules in both the issuer’s and buyer’s jurisdictions. Availability should never be inferred from the fact that a website loads.

Consider a hypothetical token linked to one share. A buyer would still need to understand fees, the route back to cash and how a dispute is handled. Without that information, the convenient interface says little about the complete investment.

Roqqu’s proposal is worth watching as an attempt to widen distribution. For now, it is better understood as a developing plan than a finished route into the Nigerian stock market. Readers should wait for verifiable product documents and regulatory information rather than treating a proposal as an invitation to send money.
