Professional photographers who covered an athletics event in 2026 have a new deadline to note. World Athletics has opened its Photograph of the Year competition, with entries due by 11:59 p.m. Monaco time on October 30.

The official October 14 announcement asks entrants to submit one image, accompanied by a caption, the date it was taken, technical information and a short biography. The stated file limit is 5 MB.

A five-person panel will select three finalists, with the finalists due to be announced on November 9. The process also includes an Instagram fan vote from November 9–15, and the winner is scheduled to be named on November 28 ahead of the World Athletics Awards.

Photographers should read the full competition rules before submitting, particularly the eligibility and image-rights provisions. A promotional summary cannot replace those terms.

The caption is part of the photograph’s credibility

A memorable sports image often captures something that disappears almost immediately: a reaction after the finish, a change in body position or the relationship between an athlete and the surrounding crowd. But the image becomes harder to interpret if the caption is inaccurate.

The event, athlete, date and stage of competition help a viewer understand what is being shown. A technically strong photograph with the wrong result attached can create a misleading story.

For a competition entry, keep the original file and the relevant metadata organised. Work from a clearly identified version so that the submitted picture can be traced back to its source. If an editing question is unclear, consult the rules rather than assume that an acceptable treatment for a personal portfolio is acceptable in a judged contest.

Choosing one photograph also requires a different judgment from assembling a gallery. A sequence can explain an event across several frames; a single entry needs to stand on its own while retaining enough context to be understood.

For fans, the competition offers a reason to look at athletics from another perspective. A photograph can reveal effort, technique or emotion that a results table cannot communicate.

The announced voting stage should be followed through World Athletics’ official channels. That will help viewers distinguish the actual finalists from older winning images or unofficial selections being shared alongside the competition.
