Mayorkun Tells Emerging Artists to Build a Connection Before Copying a Star’s Image

Mayorkun has advised emerging musicians to focus on developing a career and connecting with listeners rather than copying the reserved public image of an established star.

His comments, reported by Daily Post on October 16, refer specifically to newcomers attempting to imitate the kind of public distance associated with Wizkid. The point is about timing and audience relationships: an approach that works for someone with an established following may not help an artist still being discovered.

It is a useful distinction for musicians navigating a crowded release environment. A public image can support the work, but it cannot do all the work of introducing it.

Visibility with a purpose

Being visible does not have to mean posting constantly. A new listener may simply need a clear way to understand who the artist is, hear the current release and find out where to follow the next one.

An artist can make that easier by keeping release information consistent, using working links and sharing material that gives the audience a reason to return. A rehearsal clip, an explanation of a song’s starting point or a well-recorded live performance can each offer something different.

The useful question is whether a post helps a listener form a relationship with the music. A carefully manufactured air of mystery may produce attention, but it can also leave someone unsure what they are being asked to listen to.

There is a difference, too, between learning from a successful musician and reproducing every aspect of their behaviour. The visible strategy may be the result of years of work, a particular team or an audience that already understands the artist’s habits.

For an emerging act, a small, reliable pattern can be more sustainable: release a strong piece of work, explain where it can be found, respond thoughtfully to genuine interest and keep improving the performance.

That approach still allows privacy. Artists do not need to expose their personal relationships or every moment of their day in order to communicate clearly about their work.

Mayorkun’s advice is best read as a prompt to match a public approach to the stage of the career. The goal is not to become a less private version of another star. It is to give people a clear reason to pay attention to an artist who has something of their own to offer.
