NAFDAC has described a week of enforcement involving suspected counterfeit and unwholesome goods valued at more than N5.3 billion. The reported operations covered different locations and categories, rather than one single discovery.

According to PUNCH’s October 17 report, the agency’s spokesperson discussed seizures in Lagos and Aba as well as a destruction exercise in Port Harcourt. The products mentioned include drinks, packaging materials, pharmaceuticals and other goods.

The distinction between seizure and destruction is worth preserving. A headline combining their values should not leave readers assuming that every item was found and destroyed in the same place or that every suspect has been convicted.

The report nevertheless points to a practical consumer problem: packaging can be part of the deception. A familiar name or convincing-looking label is not, on its own, enough to establish the origin of a product.

What to do with a suspicious purchase

Keep the product, receipt and packaging where it is safe to do so, and record where and when it was bought. Those details are more useful to a complaint than a photograph circulated without a location or transaction history.

Do not try to establish safety by tasting, mixing or using a suspicious item. A home experiment is not a reliable substitute for the appropriate regulatory process.

For medicines, use an appropriate licensed provider and seek professional guidance about a suspected problem. Do not abruptly substitute another treatment on the basis of a social-media warning that has not been verified.

It is also important not to expand a specific enforcement report into an unsupported claim about every product from a city, market or brand. Legitimate businesses and consumers can be harmed when an allegation loses its original limits as it is forwarded.

Anyone reporting a concern should use the agency’s official channels and distinguish what they personally observed from what they heard elsewhere. If a product appears linked to illness or an urgent medical problem, obtaining appropriate care takes priority over debating its authenticity online.

The next useful updates will identify the regulatory findings and actions attached to particular goods. For consumers, the immediate lesson is careful purchasing, preserving evidence and reporting concerns—not assuming that a dramatic valuation tells the complete story of product safety.
